As cirrhosis progresses, the liver’s filtering capacity slows, causing medications to build up in the body. This causes the body to be unable to fight infection effectively. Additionally, fluid builds up in the abdomen and legs. The toxins can lead to mental confusion and coma. Other signs include personality changes, memory loss, and changes in sleep patterns. The liver also has a harder time producing certain proteins that help the blood clot, making it easier to bruise.

Liver pain is common with cirrhosis. Around eighty percent of those with liver disease report pain. Of these, over half experience chronic pain. Liver pain is typically located in the upper right abdomen. It feels like a dull throbbing pain or a stabbing pain. Some people also experience general abdominal discomfort, which may be caused by fluid retention or an enlarged spleen. When the pain gets worse, liver disease can progress to other organs, such as bones and kidneys.
